Did You Know That We Are On Call 24/7

Ever since I started SP Services back in 1989, we have always had a philosophy of going the extra mile for our customers.

This wasn't just to go 'one more step' to beat our competitors as quite frankly back then we didn't have as many as we do today. If you're too young to remember as far back as 1989, there was no internet to speak of, let alone GoogleBingFacebook or Amazon.

I guess this 24/7 work ethic partly came from my early career with the NHS and my 25 years with St John Ambulance, which I joined at the age of 12. I guess if I wasn't on shift with the NHS, then I was probably out on some duty like Wimbledon Tennis or Trooping the Colour or Twickenham Rugby with St John in London.

Major Incident wise, I can certainly remember being at my St John HQ in Richmond on stand-by for the London Ambulance Service when the 1987 Kings Cross Station Fire and the 1988 Clapham Train Crash were going on. As a young ambulance member, I vividly recall watching with horror the 1985 Bradford City Stadium Fire, the 1986 Herard of Free Enterprise Disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Football Disaster on my TV at home.

Has this shaped my philosophy and the way SP works with its customers?, absolutely yes.

We all know that the vast majority of our customers operate 24/7, whether they be ambulance, fire, police, NHS, military, the voluntary aid societies, private providers, HM prisons, coastguard, RNLI to name just a handful of them.

Ever since 1989, we have always made ourselves available 24/7, 365 days a year to our major customers and contracts, as well as those organisations and governments, both foreign and domestic, who need our services and equipment during a natural disaster, terrorist attack or some other such catastrophe where multiple casualties are involved. This also includes those NGO's and charities that provide humanitarian aid to conflict zones and refugee hot spots.

In the past we have supplied urgent medical supplies across the globe, often at night, at weekends and on bank holidays. We were even called out on Boxing Day in 2004 to help provide the UK Government with emergency medical supplies to support the rescue effort following the Indian Ocean Earthquake & Tsunami.

Some of the other disasters we have been responded to include the Nepal Earthquake in 2015,  the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014 and 2015the London 7/7 Bombings in 2005 and Montserrat's Volcano in 1998.

Why don't our competitors offer this service you may well ask. Well we can only guess but I suspect it's because it's both hard work and requires a high level of commitment from myself, my management team and the rest of my hard working staff to be on call & available 24/7. We don't simply switch on the answerphone at 5pm and forget about our customers until 9am the following day.

We know that with the best will in the world, and even the best planning, that incidents will happen above and beyond anyone's reasonable expectations. Many organisation now write SP Services into their Major Incident Plan.
