Midlands Healthcare Firms Capitalise on Growing Demand from the Middle East

Yesterday (21st March), more than 60 Midlands firms from the healthcare and life sciences sector met with prospective buyers from the Middle East at an event in Coventry, organised by The Midlands Engine and the Department for International Trade (DIT).

More than 150 one-to-one meetings were hosted with international buyers from the UAE, Oman and Kuwait to forge exporting relationships for UK businesses. 18 international buyers were present, including Pharmalink, the leader in global healthcare regulatory affairs; Dubai’s Ministry of Health and Prevention, a regulator and supervisor of the healthcare sector; Gulf Drug, supplier of healthcare products for clinics, pharmacies and hospitals in the Middle East and North Africa region; and Capital Health, which operates two large private healthcare facilities in the UAE.

With the Midlands home to over 1,000 life science companies, this event is the latest initiative from DIT to help these firms unlock new business opportunities in the Middle East. Earlier this year, 34 local businesses were supported to attend Arab Health in Dubai, the world’s second largest medical tradeshow with more than 100,000 professionals and exhibitors attending from over 160 countries. It resulted in a new large contract win for Telford-based SP Services and forged links with the business and one of the UAE’s largest healthcare provider. Almost £2.2bn is forecasted in total new contract wins to come from Arab Health over the next 12 months.

Paul Watts, Business Development Manager at SP Services, and one of the speakers at yesterday’s event, said: “Since we started proactively exporting five years ago we’ve received support from DIT through our trade adviser and attending a number of events such as the annual Arab Health, which we attended for the second time this year. This has been an invaluable platform for us to speak with international buyers and has generated new business leads that have set us up for an exciting year ahead.

“The Middle East healthcare sector presents great opportunities for us and we’ve seen strong demand for our services so we encourage other business to explore these opportunities overseas too.”

Ian Harrison, Director of Exports, at the Department for International Trade in the Midlands, comments: “The life science and healthcare sectors are among the priority sectors identified by the UAE government. As a result, these industries in the Gulf have seen extraordinary growth in the past few years.

“We work closely with the UAE to help develop strong relationships with businesses here in the Midlands looking to export their goods and services. Meet the buyer events and international missions like the delegation to Arab Health are unrivalled opportunities for businesses such as SP Services to foster relationships with overseas buyers and benefit from the demand out there for British goods and services.”
