Steve at the 2012 London Olympics

A Shropshire company contracted to provide medical supplies for the Olympics recorded their own personal best in delivering urgently needed equipment in record time.
SP Services, of Telford, whose employees had worked round the clock to prepare thousands of medical kits for this Summer’s once in a lifetime event, were also called on at a moment’s notice to re-supply equipment which was running low.
They made ten urgent deliveries from Shropshire to the Olympic Park in London during the two week event to provide hundreds of much needed additional medical supplies.
Nose swabs for boxers, bandages for BMX bikers and even a “just in case” maternity kit for mothers-to-be – especially with athlete Mo Farrah’s wife expecting twins – were all whizzed down the motorway to the Olympic Park in East London.
“We didn’t want to rely on carriers so we made the deliveries ourselves to ensure they got there on time,” said SP Services MD Steve Bray, who founded the company and runs it with son Dan and a staff of 33 based at Hortonwood, Telford.
“It worked out very well. We would get a call at about 3pm to say they needed more equipment so I or my son would set off at 5pm to make the deliveries and fortunately the traffic was not bad at all at that time and when we arrived at the Olympic Park we were able to drop off the equipment and get home to Shropshire quite safely by about midnight.”
SP Services, which supplied three different sized medical bags containing vital lifesaving equipment for doctors, paramedics and first aiders at every single sports event for the Olympics, are now getting ready to re-supply the Paralympics as and when organisers need more medical equipment.
“The boxing events were certainly busy for us as every Olympic boxer had a medical before a fight and we had a run on nasal swabs from fight injuries. BMX bikers needed daily sterile dressings for their injuries and we were also busy re-supplying medical kits at the water events,” added Steve.
Whether it was an injury on the sports track or a sports fan in the audience falling ill – the medical supplies used to treat them were all from Shropshire’s SP Services.
Everything from plasters to blood pressure monitors, splints to stethoscopes, cling film for burns or equipment to deal with a cardiac arrest – all is at hand in the medical kits.
SP Services had over 1,250 bags specially designed for the Olympics and used their medical knowledge to advise on some of the necessary equipment.
“They wanted everything they needed in easy to use medical bumbags and backpacks and identified our products as best suited for their needs,” said Steve, who took on more staff as a direct result of winning the Olympic contract.
“There is every piece of medical kit from anaesthetics to equipment to keep the airways open and IV drips to treat patients for any eventuality before they get into an ambulance to go to hospital.”
