Leatherman Raptor Medical Shears FAQ's

How to clean Leatherman Raptor shears?

To clean your Leatherman Raptor shears, start by using a low-viscosity oil like WD-40 or Liquid Wrench. This helps flush out any moisture or debris trapped in the joints. If the shears have sticky substances or general grime, you can wash them in a mild soap and water solution. For tougher residues like tar, mineral spirits or turpentine can be used—just avoid harsh chemicals like acetone or brake cleaner, as they can damage plastic parts.

After cleaning, dry the shears thoroughly and apply a PTFE or Teflon-based lubricant to the pivot points to keep them moving smoothly. If your shears have been exposed to saltwater or marine environments, rinse them with fresh water first, then dry and lubricate them to prevent corrosion.

How to sharpen Leatherman raptor scissors?

The Raptor scissors may have both straight and serrated edges, and each requires a different sharpening method. For straight edges, you can use a standard sharpening tool like a whetstone or rod. Leatherman recommends sharpening at a 32° angle (16° per side).

For serrated edges, use a sharpening system specifically designed for serrations. Only sharpen the beveled side of the blade - never the flat side - as this can wear down the serrations and reduce cutting performance. If your Raptor shears feature MagnaCut® steel, Leatherman offers a free sharpening service.
